Last time we went, my daughter was 11 and wanted some freedom. We left her in the hotel grounds while we went shopping, she was fine, and there was always someone watching the pool area. Several times when we were eating dinner locally, she wanted to go back to the hotel (about 100yds down the road) while we listened to music etc. We felt quite comfortable letting her go. When we went to Waterbom Park, she often went off on her own to go down the slides, a couple of times I went to find her and one of the lifequards would say "you looking for you're daughter, she's over there". Don't ask me how they knew which child happened to be mine, but they were right. Locals love children, and I think they'll be no shortage of people to keep their eye on them for you.
