One of the great pleasures of Bali is being able to be comfortably dressed for just about any occasion. As far as I am concerned, if someone else chooses to dress in restrictive clothing then it is their choice. And if they feel hot and uncomfortable then it is their problem.

Some people talk about men not doing the right thing by being too casually dressed in "nice" restaurants. Well, if they don't like the way I am dressed then they can just mind their own business. I remember not so many years ago when La Lucciola was smaller, less pretentious and less expensive than it is now. There used to be a cheeky lifesaver, Made, in his bamboo watchtower and a long row of recliners where the lawn meets the beach. Many of the clients, both male and female, wore nothing but G-strings and just wrapped a sarong around themselves when they went into the restaurant for a meal. It didn't seem to upset anyone.

As many of us are aware, Indonesia is experiencing [electrical] power shortages and this situation is likely to worsen as both demand and fuel prices go up. The Indonesian president has suggested that government officials and the like should wear more sensible traditional clothing rather than suits and ties and thus reduce the need for office airconditioning. Makes sense to me. I wonder if he will lead by example?
