Still in Jl Laksmana (Eat Street)

Reflections - this was a quick meal as it was our friends' last night so we had to be quick before their lift to the airport. Mie Goreng and Pork Ribs. Total 140,000 ($19). Complimentary Arak on arrival. The ribs were absolutely huge. We think they were buffalo. Nice setting, service a bit slow.

Sate Bali - now this was where we found out about the cooking class. They do offer a banquet menu, but we opted to choose our own dishes. The chef used to work at the Hyatt, so the quality is amazing and it's really lovely to eat authentic Balinese food. Chicken Ball Soup (which was out of this world), Mie Goren, Mixed Sate, Balinese Pancake stuffed with coconut, Black Rice Pudding. Total 255,000 ($35). Probably a bit pricey, but well worth it. Nyomen, the owner and chef, is taking over the property next door and opening a Thai restaurant next year. Oh, you also get complimentary nibblies and dips on arrival.

Taste - last year there was one restaurant, now there's 2, right next door to each other. Meal was basic but enjoyable, but the service was exceptional. French Onion Soup, Duck Fillets, Spinach Ravioli. Total 139,000 ($19). Complimentary Salmon Pate on arrival. When we commented on how nice it was, we were promptly given another plate full. Also, my partner started coughing mid-way through his meal and the waiter came running over with a bundle of tissues for him. Very thoughtfull.

Base Bali - we'd often see lots of people in this restaurant when we walked past in the afternoon so we thought we'd give it a go one night. Seafood Springrolls x 2 (which I'd go back for - yum), Chicken Schnitzel with vegies and wedges, Pork Fillets in a Mango Sauce, Fruit Salad with Ice Cream and drizzled with Arak. Total 113,000 ($15), very good value.

The Metro - this is a new addition to Eat Street. Advertised as serving Aussie Roasts and screening Footy and Cricket on the big screen. Salt & Pepper Squid, Seafood Skewers, Bangers & Mash (just to remind us of home) and a couple of cocktails. Total 210,000 ($28). Afterwards, we made use of the snooker table in the bar area for a bit of a laugh.

Soho - this was the choice of our accompanying family's 12 and 15 year olds. It's a typical American Style 24-hour joint. When I saw the all day breakfast menu I couldn't help but choose the Eggs Benedict. Not your usual dinner time choice, but what the hey, I was on holidays. Partner had Calamari and Spaghetti and Meatballs. We both finished off with Cheesecake. Total 170,000 ($23).

The last 2 restaurants we tried on this stretch of road I've already spoken about in my Sort of JBR. They were Venue @ The Moon and Khaima Morrocan Restaurant.

Venue @ The Moon is now a very classy establishment. We opted for the tapas menu and chose Spring Rolls, Prawn Rolls, BBQ Octopus, Calamari and Wedges. All of these items were equally delicious. The couple we went with also enjoyed their meals. Total 220,000 ($30). A really fun night out when they have a band. Lots of dancing and singing, but a real family feel to the place.

Khaima - now I can't remember the proper names for the dishes as they are authentic Morrocan. The menu is also very extensive. We chose Feta & Spinach pastries, Chicken pastries, Lamb & Vegetable Stew, Chicken & Vegetable Stew. The stews are slow-cooked so the meat just falls apart. Total 300,000 ($41). This was with quiet a few drinks. Don't forget to go on the nights they have entertainment as it's a great photo opportunity. Afterwards we went across the road to Punto & Basta for dessert.

So, that's about it for Eat Street.

Other areas to follow.
