I've backpacked around the world and have found Bali to be one of the safest places I've visited.
Not saying you can trust everyone, just be as careful as you would be in any of the big cities in Australia. There are places here and in Bali that I'd steer clear of, particulary late at night..
I just take enough cash for the day with me (wallet in my back pocket) and I leave the remainder of my valuables in locked in the hotel safe.
I've been to Bali 6 times and the only theft I've personally been aware of is when this guy in our hotel got drunk and had his wallet stolen by a prostitute..
I say leave the bumbag at home...and keep clear of prostitutes...
And remember, it's Bali you're visiting NOT East LA, or the Bronx!
