about how often to change money. Why not change the bulk of your money at the beginning of your trip (if the moneychanger can afford it that is!)? If you fiddle around with small amounts everyday there is a chance that you dont have enough money at some time and having to change money at either a low rate or somewher dodgy but also I've noticed that people can get a bit obsessed about the exchange rate and start spending large amounts of time trolling the streets of Kuta for that extra 250 or so rupiah per dollar.
The other thing is, for first time travellers especially, I would suggest taking some travellers cheques. If the worse should happen (and it most probably wont) and you lose your cash, bag or whatever then your travellers cheques can be easily accounted for and replaced. And if you dont use them you can save them for next time or bring them home and deposit them back into your bank account.
Hope your trip is fantastic and yo have all the fun in the world.
