Aussie dollars is the easiest and best way to keep track of your money, if you have hotel transfers you won't need rupiah at airport, although if you pay your VOA in Aussie Dollars they will give you change in rupiah so you will get a fair bit from that (we're just back and got over 100,000 rupiah back in change). Only change in Kodak Shops but don't trust them blindly and they can rip you off as well, my best tip is to always calculate what you should recieve yourself and always, always check your money before you leave, if they are reputable they won't mind a bit, and should give you a receipt, if all fails and you don't feel comfortable with that the hotels all change money as well just at a bit of a lower rate (but not much).
