at Bali Adventure Tours at Taro you can find your own way and pay at the desk (without lunch included, then just buy your own lunch). I would definitely do the full ride though. We did with kids 10, 8 and 4 and they all adored it. There's lots to see on the 40 minute ride, it does go fast. Put the biggest adult with the biggest child on 1 elephant and the smallest adult with the 2 smallest kids on another.
Also lots of fun feeding elephants and watching the elephant show (included in entry).
Honestly, my 4yo got bored with many things in Bali (v short attention span), but the 40 mins on the elephants were a highlight for her. They enjoy just watching their siblings on the next elephant too and waving to each other.
