Stop worrying about the Javanese. The Balinese blame them for everything, but you don't have to believe it.
I have been drunk and lost in Javanese cities, wandering through the back alleys, and the worst thing that a mob of Javenese did was point towards the hotel I was looking for. On at least half the occasions I've been lost and asked for directions in Java, the person I asked stopped what they were doing and gave me a ride.
Indonesians in general are much nicer to foreigners than we are. Javanese are no exception.
Yes, bad things happen. There's a lot of people and most of them are poor. But it's a tiny, tiny fraction of the population who would ever harm you. If you do get in trouble, yell as loud as you can and hundreds of people will appear as if by magic, and they will help you.
