Had looked on the internet in Jan 05 for advertised villas/houses and found them really expensive. Went to Bali end jan to househunt for myself. Wanted to stay 1-4 months in Sanur. Didnt even bother with the advertised villas because of the cost. Just started asking around people I "sort' of" knew. They're enthusiastic to help because they get a commission if you agree to the house. Most of these people worked in bars/restaurants and the beach but all knew somebody (usually cousin or uncle) who has a house. They'd organise a time for me to view each property. This is what I found:
Anything under 12 months is not attractive to the owner. You'd think any oocupancy would be good, but its simply not true. They'd rather wait for a 1 year occupant.
The price per month is approx Rp3000000 for a 12 month lease.This will get u a 2 storey, 4 bed/4bath, 3 lounge room on mezzanine floors villa, sometimes with small pool. REALLY LOVELY HOMES.But I only wanted 4 months!!!
Theres a difference between house vs villa. Villa is completely seperate, with high garden wall and gate. House is often inside a compound (still modern) but shared gate, gardens etc. Electricity approx Rp50000 p.m.
You need to check these places out at about midnite, they can be really quiet during the day and not realise they're behind a "cafe". Cant stress that enough, nearly got caught had it not been for an honest friend who pointed out the cafe behind & the noise of the music is shocking.
The houses are very cheap (rp1600000 pm), easier to get for a short period BUT not private re: no private gardens, u can hear your neighbours sneezing, children playing and cocks which by the way crow at least 4 times a day. But I liked it, felt very safe and will do it again.
