Hi Torda,
Yes - right next door is Amed Hotel which has a nice bar/restaurant on beachfront that served cold bintangs. There are quite a few restaurants near the house - just turn left as you come out. I can't remember names - there is one just past the Amed Hotel set up on the hill that was really nice and very cheap. We also went to Gede's - not flash interior but great food. There is a mini mart very close to buy tonic, supplies etc but Nengah will get them in the fridge for you if you want. There are no money changers or atms in Amed - so be prepared. My husband and friend bought really nice good quality sarongs at the mini mart and lived in them !! The food at the house is great - we paid on average about 400 000 rp - but there were 6 of us. You must have Indian - it is not what you expect but is Nengah's speciality. As for buying things - the kids really need clothes - t shirts, shorts, skirts ,sandals, sports shoes etc. I wished I had taken a suitcase full of 2nd hand from home. They are quite small compared to westerners - so childrens size 3 - 8 would be fine. Nengah took us in to Amlapura to buy supplies for the school - you could buy clothes there or even at the street stalls at Amed - that way you help the locals also. We did tip staff - usually after they took us somewhere - Nengah will tell you when to and when not to. My husband left quite a few of his tshirts with the staff and they were appreciated. I'm sure you will have a great time - feel free to email me direct if you want more info.
