It doesn't matter whether it is 2% alcohol light beer or 20% spirit - you are only allowed 1 litre duty free.
You can take more in so long as you declare it and are prepared to pay "duty" on it. You will be taken off into a little room, intimidated and threatened with confiscation. Just smile through the whole process, stay calm and have a couple of $20 bills in different pockets.
The last time (June) we declared a 4 litres each and the customs guys asked was it in a cask? We said yes and he just waved us through.
A previous trip I paid $20 "duty" and they said that wasn't enough. I just laughed at them and walked out and took my cases. Other times I've had to pay $50 to get a carton of champagne in.
It is a moving target - just make sure you declare it and be prepared to let them have it if you don't want to play the game.
Best of luck!
