I always go to Yogyakarta by air from Bali each visit.I love yogya and now know a number of people there.I stay in Jl. Prawirotamin about Rp 10---15000Rp taxi ride south of city. There are a number of good cheap guest houses with pool in that street.I usually stay at Rose guest house with big pool.Rp 80,000--90,000 a night. The more expensive but very pleasant Duta G.H. with smaller pool is next door.Accross the street a few doors down is Perwita Sari GH where I used to stay.It has a reasonable pool, and is good for lower priced accommodation. No A.C. except for 2 rooms.Rose has both and cheaper rooms without AC.I take ACRoom.I've been to Solo[Surakarta]many times and stay at Westerners. From Yogya there are many day trips which can be booked from agents in Jl Prawirotamin Borobudor Temple and Prambanan temple are a must see.If time permits a trip to Pangandarin is wonderful. But a three night stay is essential. With bus and ferry it takes about eight hours to get there. There is plenty of accomodation available there also restaurants.Pangandarin is via Cilicap in south of Java on coast.Because it is on a peninsular there are beaches on both sides.I've also spent a few days in Bandung a beautiful city which is cooler than Bali.
People who think Bali is cheap for goods should visit Yogya. This is a real shoppers Paradise.Jl Maliboro is wonderful. there are market stalls each side of this three lane street as well as good shops.
If you go to Yogya allow at least three days.Preferably more.
