While the Qantas flights themselves aren't too flash re: food, service etc, when it comes to rebooking flights we've had nothing but great support from them. Twice we've had our flights changed by Qantas to dates/times that havent suited us and both times we've been able to change to anything we wanted without extra cost or ff points. We have even been able to reroute through different cities and had one part of the journey booked on a different airline. I think it totally depends on the consultant that picks up the phone and whether they are having a good or a bad day. My advice would be to keep ringing back until you get someone who will help you out.
