If you've never done this, it's easy. You bargain for a hotel room just like you bargain for a sarong or something on the beach. If the hotel doesn't give you the deal you want, you move on and try another.
To give yourself an idea of a fair cost, print out some of the offers from hotel websites before you go. You shouldn't need to pay more. This way you get to see before you buy too.
