For some reason can't post after your questions, so I'm putting it in here.

Within walking distance from the Patra [as long as the kids aren't too little]:

Pantai Restaurant, right on the beach. Cheap and friendly. The beach sellers are allowed to come up to the edge of the restaurant, but not inside. They're nice people. They'll do their best to tempt you and particularly tempt your kids. If you're not accustomed to this style of doing business, then this is an easy way to get used to the bargaining.

If you want something classy and more expensive, Ma Joly is just past the Pantai. You can just pop in and have a look at the menu and see what you think.

Across the road before you get to the Pantai, the Green Garden Spa restaurant. Pleasant and cheap by hotel standards.

Past the Pantai, you go across the road and walk up a narrow street lined on one side by little shops of all kinds. All nice friendly people. Have a Coke with Dini half way up.

At the top, turn left, walk a little way and look out across the road for Daddy's Cafe up a funny spiral staircase. Cheap, pleasant and you can sit and watch the world go by.

Back across the road and towards the direction of Waterbom and Kuta Square. You pass a small, but well-stocked supermarket. Then a Kodak shop for honest easy moneychanging. Then you're at the Green Garden Hotel, another pleasant place for a cheap meal.

I like Janoko Tailors in Poppies 2.

I'm sure you'll have a great time.
