We recently booked hotels via internet/e-mail which didn't turn out quite as we'd hoped, and it was convenient that we hadn't paid up front and we could stay for fewer nights than we'd originally booked.
I wouldn't be happy if this became the norm. Paying a deposit is one thing, but paying the whole price way upfront sounds like a good deal for the hotel, not the consumer.
