In NSW you take your licence to NRMA(It is called something different in other states) you pay(sorry unsure how much,$25? I do know it wasn't too expensive. When we did it for USA it lasted for 3 months i think from memory) they issue you with an international licence. Remember though if you have a car licence you will only be issued with an international car licence, so you can't drive bikes:-( unless you want to pay towards the polisi christmas fund ;-( if in this case have a little money in wallet and hide the rest :-(
