Kuta Ken, shopaholic and majik - the antibiotics are to stop the infection spreading to other people. Once you have whooping cough you have to ride it out.
A question, majik, about the 4 year old. Did they have the triple antigen (DPT) injections as babies? DPT stands for diptheria, pertussis (whooping cough) and tetanus. If so, they should be OK.
If not, please get the whole family immunised as soon as possible. As a mother of four whose baby was in ICU with whooping cough at 2 weeks old I am a fanatic when it comes to rights for my children. We almost lost my daughter because someone in Melbourne had whooping cough and spread it around.
By the way, whooping cough is more contagious than a cold, I believe - it can even pass through supermarket airconditioning (or aeroplanes).
