Stay away from the Bounty or Barong hotel, they are for young people. He Melasti Beach Resort is ok but you will find you get a lot of families with kids there. The Bali Dynasty and Kartika Plaza are big resort hotel which have everything you could want in a hotel. Getting up there in price but both great places.
A lot cheaper, The Kuta Seaview is a good reasonably priced hotel right on the beach in Kuta. Small intimate pool area and good for 30s to 40s.
It gets very hot during the day so its best get out and about in the evening. Just walk up Poppies lane to Legian Road and find a restaurant on the street. The Macaroni Club is good. Leave the shorts and thongs at the hotel. It's nice to dress to go out in the evening. The little black dress may be a little over the top unless you are going to a hotel night club. The skirt and top with a Frangipani in behind the left ear usually does the trick.
It is quite safe to walk the street at night but avoid the dark back streets and lanes after hours.
Remember, the best pick up line is 'Hello'.
Another good line is 'do you know of any good Restaurants in this area'. This is a good one because, if the wife suddenly appears from nowhere, she will turn all protective and ask you to join them for dinner.
The Hard Rock hotel centre Stage bar can be noisy but lots of fun. Night clubs attached to hotels are worth a look in around midnight. Don't leave your drink unattended anywhere and the same rules apply about over doing the alcohol.
The great thing about travelling is that everyone has one thing in common. You are there together and you all have something to talk about.
