I think it's only Quinine that you take when you actually get the Malaria as it is a most effective medicine but not recomended as prophalaxic... this is only from memory though- I could be wrong.

I took Doxicycline (recomended for use in Indo and what they sell). I was already pretty tanned from being in Bali for 1 month but I did get sunburn on my feet when I started the tablets. Crazy dreams and all that but hey- way better than getting Malaria.

The only case I have seen of Malaria was my brother-in-law in Sambawa, indo, and he was taking Anti-malaria tablets(can't remember which ones). We had a few drinks for a friends birthday and he forgot to put his deet on before the sun went down and got a few bites- by lunch time the next day we were rushing him to a hospital. halucinating, vomiting, muscle cramps.... we didn't need a diagnoses to know what it was. The most tell-tale sign is a very stiff-sore neck and being photo-sensitive (not wanting to go outside)
