There is wonderful snorkeling in the Amed area [East Bali] At Selang Beach and Lipah bay the beaches are sandy. You can snorkle straight from the beach. Less than 2 meters from the shore, in shallow, safe water you begin to see the magic unfold of the undersea world.
Amed is just over 2 hours drive from Sanur. It is a fabulous part of Bali with friendly local people and a great variety of places to stay and eat. Blue Moon Villas, Good Karma Bungalows.. both at Selang Beach. Coral View, Pondok Vienna or Bayou cottages at Lipah Bay.
It is well worth staying a night or two to get the real feeling of the place.
I was last there in April. It was the end of the rainy season. Everything was lush and green. I imagine by now it will be more dry and arid... but still lovely.
You can rent snorkling equipment there.
