Some people say to rub them against your teeth. Fake are smooth and real are rough. This isn't always the case. Good fakes are textured to appear more real.

The only real way to tell without doubt is to hold a flame under the pearl. Plastic fake ones melt and real ones don't. Glass pearls won't melt but the coloured coating on them will.
