I wouldn't discount it being malaria, as I have heard of people contracting it in Bali in spite of the "fact" that Bali is a malaria free zone. Dengue fever might be another thing to look into too. And hepatitis.
In January, the last day of our trip, I was incredibly tired and had diarrhea. Husband had unbelievable diarrhea that started before we reached home and fever, chills and tired. We thought not much of it, as it happens sometimes....he, especially, ate some pretty funky stuff from Benny the T-shirt guy near Rambutan in Lovina...green, gelatinous, disgusting looking...he said it was good though.
Turns out his first day back at work was company physical day, and he had a general check up that included some basic blood work. One liver related level came back really high, and they sent him off to a hospital for further investigation. Turned out he had Hepatitis A, and our daughter and I probably had it too, but more mildly. Before the trip, we had Hep A vaccines, but only 2 of the 3 required injections, which we were told was very good, as without the vaccine we all would likely have been very, very ill. The level of virus in his blood was way, way higher than would have been caused by the vaccine...they said he definitely had the disease.
So, don't discount anything until a test shows negative for it.
