Wise to book driver ahead of time?

Hello all you Bali-crazied people! We are planning a first trip to Bali. Lucky to have found this forum! Do you think its a good idea to book a driver ahead of time? We know we want a driver on June 19 to get us from the Kuta area to Ubud and to shop and tour on the way. Do you overpay by quite a bit by booking ahead? Perhaps worth a bit more to get a recommended driver...
