You might as well say don't lock your house when you go out, because if a thief really wants to get in they will. Any precautions you can take are better than none, and being an ex copper I can assure that most thiefs hit the easy targets first and leave the harder ones if time is an issue, which it normally is.
On another note talking about security of bags I have been reading all the pros and cons for cable ties. I stumbled across a good alternative, which is a little red plastic gadget that qantas use to secure I don't know what. It clicks shut and has to be cut off to remove and works a treat on bag zippers. The beauty of these is that they have Qantas and a sequential 7 didgit number stamped into the plastic. So if you take note of the number you will be aware if your bag has been tampered with, obviously if the tag is gone or if it has been replaced it will be with a tag with a different number. Any one out there from qantas might know what these things are used by qantas for. I got a supply from a friend that flys and she says a lot of crew use them.
