The fact is that even a simple lock does give you some extra security. The normal crook will go for the easiest and quickest mark. A lock of any kind will be a deterrent if unlocked bags are around. Following on from that, the better the lock the better your degree of security. The biggest worry for the average traveller is theft from your bags. If they are unlocked the risk is greater. If the unthinkable does occur and you are on a flight where someone decides to unknowingly use you as a mule the perpertrator would more than likely make the plant in a bag that has no locks or, at the next level, one that is easier to get into. At least with the new style locks you will be aware if someone has used an authorised, or unauthorised key to open your lock. And, once again, let me assure you that the lock can ONLY BE RESET BY YOU using the combination that you have previously entered into it. And, yes you can fly with locked bags in the USA provided the locks you use are approved by the TSA (Transport Safety Authority) The types of locks acceptable are on their website (www.tsa.gov). As a government authority the TSA has faith in the locks so I think we should not be too worried by them.
Just enjoy your holiday but take a few very sensible precautions.
Cheers
