When in Legian we now stay at Kumala Pantai a couple of kilometres north of Bali Mandira next door to Jayakarta. Internet price Rp.380,000 per night. Very nice hotel with affordable food and drinks as well. Only one problem, (due largely I suspect to this forum!!!) it is extremely popular and often booked out unless you book 6 months ahead. This then doesn't work if you want to grab a cheap fare offer and fly next week or next month.
With this in mind we are checking out a backup plan in October and staying at Puri Naga on the corner of Jln Double 6, which is very budget but has air con, fridge, T.V. pool etc. We had a look last December and they quoted us Rp.250,000 per night. With kids I reckon Kumala Pantai would probably be more your cuppa tea. You should have a look when you're in Bali. I understand Puri Raja between the two is also quite cheap too but I haven't stayed there.
