For starters, the smoking rooms at Jakarta airport are much more spacious and better ventilated that any I've seen in Australia. But at the international terminal, they also had these small booths for one or two people. They are not enclosed, but they have fans to suck in the smoke and they seem to work quite well.

I couldn't find a smoking room in the domestic terminal, so I approached a security guard to ask him where I could find one, but before I got there he pulled out a kretek and lit up. We just stood in the passageway, ashed in a pot-plant and put the butts in a bin.

Chang-mai airport at Singapore still use the old system of ventilation -- the air. The smoking room is on a balcony, and the air is fine. What was so wrong with that system that made everyone else change to herding people into little enclosed boxes? No buildings have more wasted space than airports.

And it's still funny that people smoke more before flying because they are nervous, yet smoking kills about a thousand times more people than plane crashes. Ya gotta laugh.
