why issue the passport with 5years (kids) or 10 years if counties don't accept if only 6 months left ??
When i get the kids new one's i may ask for the cheaper version where you don't have to pay for the last 6 months valid
I can understand if you are going to be away longer than the passport is valid for but why not accept the last 6 months???
