It has never been a problem having excess from Sydney as I have taken stuff to local schools, the problem is leaving Bali when the eyes of the A A staff in Bali light up when they see what excess you have. They quite delight in getting you. This has only happened since about October last year, and I flew with A A about 6 times before that. It just seems another way to 'get' the Aussies who must have too much money if they can shop like that!
They even charge Qantas staff for excess so I guess at least they are not prejudiced.
