- before, and off the top of my head I think it might depend on how close your relationship with them is and how much you can afford to spend (and accept the fact that this is different to what you might like to spend)..
My immediate thoughts are for how the old lady is coping with daily life with an immobile husband that she might not be able to lift, or might not be able to for much longer.
Can you get a refurbished wheelchair with solid rubber tyres from a local Rotary Club or similar? It might not only allow him to get out of the house but serve as a walking frame for her. Is there a lifting device that your local medico or nursing aide might be able to suggest?
How do they manage bathing and toilet problems? A small area of brick paving? A length of hose if they have access to a tap? Perhaps something as simple as a plastic chair with arms that the old chap can sit in without falling over? Maybe one for her too. Some plastic bowls, some hand, foot and bath towels? Soap, sponges, comb and scissors for hair trimming, shampoo? A washable rug or mat for their floor?
A plastic apron, slip on thongs or sandals that are waterproof.
A bed that is high enough for her to swing his legs over the edge and exercise?
How is their diet? Might vitamin supplements or some such be beneficial?
Is there someone who would drop in on them once or twice a week for a small charge? Maybe to chat or help with some physical chore or to bring some regular shopping.
I think I'm getting stuck in a rut.
How about a box of chocolate eclaires? I remember when our friend Adi was bed ridden she nearly leapt out of bed for these.
Hope I've been of some help.
