On our last trip in November 04 my mother and I took in 2 bottles each of champagne. We wrapped it in towels and I even put mine inside of a bucket which was in my case (the bucket is a whole other story. Whe we got to the baggage area the porters avoided us and we soon found out why, there were white chalk numbers all over our bags. So we then were taken into a room, showed a book, told off and asked us how much we paid. We tried to plead ignorance etc. and the customs guy said he felt sorry for us and would help if we gave him $10 each. So, we did! Must say if you are willing to play the game then you need to be prepared to get caught.
We won't be doing it again, it felt very dishonest. We also found a place that sells champers over there, so no need to smuggle some in.
Hope this helps.
