How many times have I heard that said - but its all worth while when you need it, and you do more often than the 'happy snapper' brigade could ever imagine.
I take the handles off mine and replace them with bolts so they don't stick out all over the place (stick the handles in the camera bag) and tie the bottom of the legs together with a cord that's long enough to reach up to the head where I tie it again with a loop between top and bottom that is big enough to go over my head and one shoulder so it will hang down my back and leave both hands free for the camera bag and hand luggage.
It will go through the x-ray with no problems.
