Hi. My hubby and i have travelled alot with our kids from when they were babies, they are now 13 and 11. We always kept the carrier with us, as well as the stroller. It was a double stroller at one time! They stored them in a compartment within the plane near where we were sitting. Things may have changed with heightened security, but if you ask when you are checking in, they will explain to you what the proceedure is. Also ask them to make sure that the childrens meals have been ordered. If not, then at this stage theres a greater possibility of correcting the prob.
Families with small children always board the plane first. What a bonus. So get thinking about your seating arrangments before you get onto the plane, check in will tell you the seating configaration. That way you can get everyone seated before the onslaught of passengers and bags.
Also buy some cheapy toys and keep them as a surprise for kids for the plane trip. Our boys were always delighted and played for hours with a new toy or book, which made the journey so much easier for everyone. Though Im sure theres been a whole Thomas the Tank collection from Sydney to London in the lost property of many an airline.
Take plenty of water and their favourite snacks/food. I found my boys wanted to eat at inconvienent times when food wasn't being served. By the way, the kids are usually served first, that way they eat before you. If any of your kids get travel sick or if your not sure, then be prepared for the worse. Always be able to reach for a sick bag where ever you are. An extra t shirt in your nappy bag for everyone should ensure you don't have that familiar smell lingering on your clothes when you arrive. Don't forget a big supply of wipes.
Aching ears is always a problem for little ones, so keep your Panadol and dispenser in your nappy bag. Getting them to chew at take off/ landing may be helpful.
Most important, ignore all the filthy looks you get from those passengers who may not be impressed with having small children near them. Its their problem not yours. Your kids will love the excitment of being on a big plane. Enjoy your holiday.
