hi fiona, i was in bali january of this year and went to star tatooist just a short walk from waterbomb park, same side and down a lane (sign in on the street). mine are quite small, (black outline only of dolphins on my back, absolutely sh*& myself before hand, but really not that painful at all dolphins took about 10 minutes only, the second one just above my pubic bone to the right, was a little more painful and had about 3 colours so took a bit longer, but again not too bad.
i was in bali for 2 weeks and checked out this place from time to time over the 2 week period and did see alot of tourists as well as locals getting work done and they all highly recommended the work and hygiene conditions. there is only 1 guy who does the work (can't think of his name) but he has friends who do piercing. on face value they are all appear a little extreme with piercings all over their faces and weird hair cuts (i'm 43 so what is extreme for me may not be for u depending on your age, ideas etc..........) the more we got to know them the less extreme they became because they were wonderful, caring, clean, decent boys.
i had mine done on 2 different occasions (a couple of days apart) and both times i was handed the needle package from the sterilicing cabinet and unwrapped them myself. i had a little bleeding with both but no scabbing at all, which i was told by people who have had them done here in melbourne to expect a fair bit of scabbing.
both my tatoos healed within a few days. because of the cost and the great work and fun times i had i don't think that i would have any done here in melbourne. i will definitely wait until i go back to bali. hope this info helps.
