My wife and I stayed at Padang Bai for 3 nights last July - we really enjoyed it. I visited Bali in 1974 and Padang Bai (and Lembongan) now is somewhat like Kuta was back then.
If you want a spot away from all the tourist hassles I'd thourghly recommend a couple of nights here. A good spot to hire a car for the day and explore futher up the east coast. We stayed at the Puri Rai, a bit more up market with (2!!) pools.
