Getting around Bali is hard enough without trying to negotiate a chair. I take one of those shopping trolley thingos for my "big" shopping days, or even just to go to the local for some Binnies LOL and that's hard enough to get around with.
My husband is disabled (although not wheelchair bound) and he finds taking his stick to be the best thing. The main problem is the height of the kerbs and the frequency of driveways. You may have to help him cross roads. I stand in the middle and hold my hand up to stop traffic so he can cross. We haven't been run over yet!!
Where are you staying? Be aware that not many Hotels have lifts, so request ground floor. Request chair transfers at airport, easier and quicker as you have your own check throughs.
If you do take his chair be aware that it will be very sweaty, if he gets pressure sores you may have to allow for that also. Cotton towels are great over any cushions he may use to soak up the sweat. I know wheelchair fabric doesn't breath.
Hire or buy a dvd player so he rest in the heat of the day.
Bali is not at all set up for the disabled, although the Balinese are charming and quick to help..get you a chair to sit on etc if they see you on sticks. There are no disabled access laws like Oz and lots of steps everywhere. It won't be easy but it will be fun. I've seen heaps of people in chairs there and you're planning ahead which is good.
Let me know if I can help any more.
