You do not say if you are familiar with these islands. If not, forget about self-drive: you're dreaming.

Taxis are not made for your intended purpose. They are for going from A to B. You will find taxis in the southern area of Bali (Kuta, Sanur, etc), but nowhere else on the island, even in Ubud. So, since you would have to rent a taxi for the whole day, you might as well rent a kijang, which is more comfortable, and with a driver who is used to driving around the island. In Lombok, it will be difficult to find a knowledgeable driver to take you around the island, but there are some. Getting up early is no problem for the drivers. In Bali and Lombok, everybody is up way before sunrise (except maybe in Kuta)

I hope this is not the first time you are visiting Bali and Lombok, and that you are familiar with these islands and their people. Furthermore, I would suggest you limit your visit to one of the two islands, as ten days is rather short. But that's your problem...
