I think that some people are very sorry after taking anti-malarial medication. Its really toxic stuff and unecessarily dosing yourself up with it can contribute to the resistant to medication strains which are starting to appear. It mostly doesn't prevent malaria outright but can lessen the symptoms or hold back the symptoms which is useful if you are travelling for long periods of time. Some of the side affects are long term nightmares and other sleep interuptions, ongoing ringing in the ears, longterm sun and other bright light sensitivity and permanent hair loss. I dont think malaria prophylactic medication should be used "just in case" but only if you are definately going to be travelling to an affected area.
