Customs are only interested if you are bringing back multiple copies of the same DVD, which would indicate that you may be going to sell them in Australia. We bought back 120 on our last trip. We bought them from a couple of different shops and most of the shops have a dvd player and TV you can test them on before you buy. We picked out all the ones we wanted and then did a random sampling of the ones we wanted them to show us working. We have only had two out of the 120 that did not work at all. As it turns out the $69 DVD player from Dick Smiths plays them all where as the $700 DVD player was a bit fussy about playing them.
We also purchased a couple of DVD multiple holders which were like a pouch that holds 40 DVDs and their paper cover then zips up. We took all of the DVDs out of their plastic containers, gave them back to the boys at the shop (they were very grateful) and bought the holders for $8 each. We are going back again this year and will purchase another bunch of them to add to our ever growing collection.
Tell you family not to worry, they will be fine.
Have a great trip
