Maybe the hassle of checking in to a hotel locally just for one night then going up to Ubud the next day could all be a bit much at the start. I think it would be better to go straight up be able to drop all your bags, have a sit and relax before putting your head on the pollow. Then you can sleep in the next day before starting your holiday proper. You just need to have someone that you can make sure is going to be there to greet you when you arrive. For a private transfer up to Ubud will cost you Rp100,000 - which is only about AU$14 or US$11.
