Gunung Kawai is just one of the spectacular historical sites around Ubud which was always just at the edge of the earliest development of Bali.
A better known one, but not really spectacular unless you walk down into the valley, is Gowa Gajah, the so-called Elephant Cave.
The Yeh Pelu rock carvings are more spectacular, easy to get to and not so dirty and dusty, with beautiful rice paddies and little streams to walk by.
If you like a mystery go to see the Moon of Pejeng, only a few kilometers up the road towards the Museum of Archaeology.
There is a link to some info and pictures of Gunung Kawi below and there is also info on these other places near the bottom of the left side column at www.filosbali.net.
Have a great holiday.
