.....Sony DSC W5. Looked at pretty much everything out there and everyone will have an opinion. Stick to either the Pentax Optio, Canon Ixus range. This is a good time to buy as many manufactures release new models this time of year so there are some bargains to be had on older models. The camera I bought is not out in Australia yet but I bought it from a guy in Sydney who imports them direct from the US, he was reccommended to me have a twelve month warranty and am very very happy with the camera. The camera cost me $540 (RRP here will be $699) but you can get the GST back on that if travelling within thirty days. I bought this camera for the following reasons.. Big LCD 2.5", some good manual controls and overides but fully Auto for my other half!, 5MP, 3x optical zoom it had very good reviews in the US and Europe but the main factor for me was that althought the batteries are rechargable they are normal AA size so you can put any old AA batteries in if you need to, you never have to worry about not having a charged batteries and the spare lithium ones are very expensive. Here is the website where I bought the camera.. http://www.d-d-photographics.com/ . I also bought a 512MB memory stick pro for $129 and I would reccommend at least this amount with 5 mega pixels especially if you take any video.
