to have experienced Bali when it was so virginal. Yes it was rough but that all adds to the experience somehow. Our first time was in 1989 when the road to Ubud was through jungle and rice terraces, all the Sanur restaurants sold Balinese rijstaffels, gamelan music and dance performances were eveywhere and the Griya Santrian was on a lovely beach (no path or second pool and less rooms). There was a great shoe shop where Mayang jewellry store is, Kuta art market actually sold art, Kuta Kidz was the most famous shop and you had to go to Denpasar to find a department store. I'd happily give up the luxury to have it back the way it was - a laid back, culturally rich, island paradise.
Think I saw that documentary you mentioned. Was on the TV not so long ago. It showed some Balinese surfers then (? 70s) and now - most very successful. It was quite interesting and very watchable.
From one Victoria to another!
