We bought a Sony Cybershot P3 when they were first out after rave reviews in the US. It really is the best camera I've ever owned (and I've had a few). I don't think they make the P3 any more, but there is probably something similar out there. Spend the extra to get a good sized memory card (128MB is fine for about 97 shots high quality) and get a model that has rechargeable batteries, as you can chew through power a fair bit with the LCD screens and all the gizmos on modern cameras. If you're buying from Aus, E-bay is definitely worth a look.
