after 4 trips, and carried a large purse (rupiah just won't fold neatly in a small one) in my day backpack. I would make sure it was tucked down the bottom of the backpack. If I was travelling en route with passport I would use a money pouch that goes around your neck as it's a hassle to have to replace a lost passport (but this time I left my passport, ticket and extra money with a friend who lives there to mind till I came back to Kuta)and I would keep my Australian cash, any large amounts of rupiah, and one of my ATM cards (I take two - one credit card and one a usual debit card) in the safe deposit box at the hotel. Lots of people walk around with bum bags but I think you need to keep your Australian? cash and passport a bit safer than that. Cargo shorts with zip or button pockets are handy to keep 'daily' cash in. My camera case was small and had two pockets, one for my camera and one for extra memory/battery and some rupiah rolled up in it. Hope this helps.
