We went through the ground floor room when we stayed at the Bali Mandira 4 weeks ago.
It is very new. The ground floor pool rooms are stunning, absolutely bootiful. They are very upmarket. The bathrooms are to die for, and have a corner spa, the room is huge and all marble and lovely lighting very sexy. They are not traditional balinese rooms but have the balinese touches. The large bed is in the middle of the room, there is a sitting area near the full length glass windows. The bathroom is behind the bed in a seperate room of course.
The next floor are the standard rooms with no balcony and the third floor has a balcony and the rooms are deluxe again I think. There is no lift so you would have to you walk to the top floor. It is not big at all, quite small. The pool is deep but smallish with a swim-up bar.
The restaurant is at the front of the hotel there is only the one. It is very much a boutique hotel but it has only been opened since December last year. It's a nice area and not that far from the beach perhaps 5 mins. walk.
If you wanted to spend your holiday in your room and hotel then I would spend the extra money. However if you plan to go out a lot and let's face it that's what you do when you go to Bali, then I would look at a hotel and book for location rather than a swanky room. What about the Bali Mandira. For location you can't beat it. It's right on the beach...
Granted it's not that new but the deluxe cottages with their semi outside bathroom are lovely and at the front of the hotel so not so far to walk to the bar, the beach, and billy's esky.. I can show you some pics if you are interested.
