You've spent all that money on a digital SLR and you are about to get the opportunity to take some wonderful photos. TAKE THE SLR. I save my SLR for holidays. Yes it can be cubersome and heavy, but I get some great shots. Took an underwater disposable on a 3 island ocean rafting trip and so regretted not bringing decent camera.
Maybe save smaller digital for meals out etc. when you don't want to be weighed down. But for scenery use the SLR.
