You mention you have bought a debit card so you shouldn't have a credit option.
I assume you would hit savings.
I have a credit union account and I just use my ordinary debit card to make withdrawals (same as I would at home). I tske the money from my savings account. This costs me nothing. One is St Gearge credit union (free if you have a house loan with them). My other is Teachers Credit Union. My Westpac account charges $5 per withdrawal (needless to say I don't bring this one) and that works in Bali too.

Maybe people meant a Credit Union account (as opposed to a Credit Card). As far as I know (I could be wrong) any money taken from a credit card attracts interest from the day you withdraw it.
The fees annoy me too. That's why I've quit Westpac and gone with St George.
If your normal debit card has a VISA or Cirrus logo you can use it overseas. The machines know your PIN anywhere (clever aren't they). Big Brother is Watching. LOL Which bank are you with? Ask them about Overseas withdrawals. Should be in their booklet (if you have time to decipher it).
Good luck.
