Was a requirement many years ago that the agent must sight your passport & then that fell by the wayside & often they just asked if it was up to date.
Last time I did a booking for Germany & Bali (end of last year) I was asked to provide a copy (or bring it in to be copied) so that it could be kept on file.
Was something they are now required to do I was told.
